All in for Accessibility

New ADA compliance requirements include social media. Here’s what you need to know.

Web accessibility is more than policy—it’s our duty. New ADA rules require state and local governments to make all digital content inclusive and accessible by upcoming deadlines. That includes websites, mobile apps, social media posts, PDFs, flyers, and videos.

At Social Assurance for Government, we believe making digital content accessible should be second nature, not because the law says so but because it’s the right thing to do.

New Regulations for 2026 & Beyond

In 2024, new regulations were introduced for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with digital accessibility standards for state and local governments. Importantly, this also includes public schools and districts. These rules apply to websites, mobile apps, social media, PDFs, flyers, videos, and more—all the ways your community connects with your organization online.

Entities must comply based on population demographics:

Entities serving populations above 50,000 must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA by April 24, 2026.

Entities serving populations under 50,000 (and special districts) have until April 26, 2027.

To be technically compliant, organizations will need to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standards. On a more human level, this means removing barriers so everyone—citizens, residents, and community members—can fully access the stories, information, and resources your organization shares.
